About Seattle Rex

Seattle Rex

For many years, this blog has existed without an “About Me” page. In February of 2011, after I once again recommended that he make one, Rex informed me that “the blog is self-indulgent enough, if you think it needs an ‘about me’ page, write it yourself.” Below, I will make a lame attempt to do just that. Before I get started, please refer to an article written by someone far more talented than I:

Now, my turn.

Rex was born in Washington DC, and moved to Seattle in the 1980′s. Over the years, Rex has held such diverse occupations as: Musician, Bicycle Messenger, Photojournalist, and Programmer/Web Developer.

In 2005, lured by what he assumed was an interesting, Libertarian environment (and from his many enjoyable prior visits), Rex moved to Las Vegas. Finding a generic Southwestern town once off-strip, he realized after a couple of years that he had made a serious mistake. Still, Rex tried to make the best of his ill-conceived move. Somewhere toward the middle of the decade, Rex took up blogging as a creative outlet, and he began colorfully documenting his love/hate relationship with Vegas.

This blog became the infamous “Vegas Rex”.

For the next 4 years, Rex authored what was arguably the most notable (and notorious) blog to have ever come out of Sin City.

Finally, at the end of the decade, Rex moved back to Seattle. Wishing to shed the notoriety (neither death threats nor marriage proposals were uncommon on any given day), he decided to scrub his old website and start over with a new domain and a somewhat more subtle style. Thus, “Seattle Rex” was born.

Rex’s writing style is most often referred to as “stream of conscious”, and he often mixes his articles with extensive photo-essays. Rex pens articles about things that interest him, including national news, technology, local issues, politics, religion, and whatever else comes to mind.

Even though he eschews politicial-correctness and leans toward the misanthropic and sarcastic; honesty, ethics, and integrity are extremely important to him. He’s turned down many lucrative writing offers over the years, and has even turned down generous offers to buy some of his websites outright because of requests to compromise that integrity. He’s the only person I know who would have done some of the things he’s done, and that’s why I am glad to know the guy.

When he isn’t working or blogging, Rex spends his free time playing the guitar, writing songs, making websites, writing Android apps, spending time with his family, and engaging in one of his favorite hobbies – “low-fi, random photography”.

And, because people ask frequently, yes, “Seattle Rex” is his name, although he answers to “Rex” as well.

His full, legal name, is actually “Rex”. No middle, no last. This is the name on his birth certificate and driver’s license. I swear to God.

Because of this, he adopted his hometown as his common-law first name, and he uses it, legally, in day-to-day life, in both business and leisure, especially when a formal first and last name is requested.

Meet the new blogger, same as the old blogger.

Welcome to Seattle Rex.
