Seahawks Parade – Fans in Westlake Park

When it’s an unprecedented event, and only a few blocks from your home … you kind of have to go.

After waiting roughly an hour, however, I forwent waving to the players as they passed by on 4th Avenue. Instead, I contented myself to celebrate my unbridled joy with what has been reported to be between 200,000-500,000 people.

I suppose it was entertaining on some level, although I’m still not sure I’ll ever fully agree with these kinds of priorities.

As it turns out, all absences from Seattle Public Schools will be

The Seahawks Won! The 12th Man Didn’t.

Pike Place 12th Man

When I lived in Olympia, one of my neighbors got a Seahawks sweatshirt from the Olympia Free Store. After wearing it only a few times, however, he promptly threw it away.

“If you don’t want it, why don’t you donate it back to the free store?”, I asked him.

“Because I wouldn’t want someone else to go through what I went through”, he replied.

I was perplexed by this response.

He went on to explain that he had only bought the shirt because it was nice and warm, but whenever he wore it, he found himself on the receiving

Super Bowl Here We Come!

Home of the 12th Man

Home of the 12th Man

Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses. — Decimus Iunius Iuvenalis, 140 B.C.

“Bread and circuses” (or bread and games) (from Latin: panem et circenses) is a metaphor for a superficial means of appeasement. In the case of politics, the phrase is used to describe the creation of public approval, not through

Space Needle 12th Man Flag

Today, my hometown football team beat my hometown football team.

The Seahags prevailed over the Foreskins, which means that tickets to next year’s games, as well as team merchandise, will almost certainly increase.

Being the ‘Hags 12th man is a little like being an abused spouse. The team doesn’t give a shit about me, and they rip me off whenever they can, but I keep coming back for more, ever loyal to the end.

Still, I guess it’s a little exciting when the home team wins, and it’s one of the few times in

A Seahawk Sunday

Panorama of Seahawks Game in CenturyLink Field

Many years ago, I was born in a small town called Washington, D.C. During those years, I was quite the Foreskin fan, seeing the team play in RFK Stadium on many occasions.

Over the last couple of decades, however, I lost touch with football altogether. The chaotic demands of life coupled with a deep-seated cynicism toward corporate sports meant that nearly 20 years would elapse before I would darken the doorstep of another NFL Stadium.

Yesterday, that doorstep went dim.

A couple of friends offered me tickets to the Seahawks game, and who was our home team playing?

That’s right

A friend of mine (Renee Fields) went to the Seahawks game on Friday, and she came back with these photographs.

I think they’re quite nice.

I still refuse to call our stadium “Century Link Field”, however, and I hope that everyone else will do the same. If the stadium truly needs a name paying homage to its financial benefactors, it should be called “The Washington State Taxpayer Stadium”.

The ridiculous name changes over the years are
