When you look at this photograph, it’s hard to imagine that you are looking into the middle of a major city of 600,000 people, but that’s why we’re called the Emerald City.
PIctured above is Green Lake, the geographic center of Seattle’s northern half.
It looks like Olympia, feels like the Pacific Northwest of yesterday, and seems like a world away from Downtown/Capitol Hill. It is, however, only a 15 minute bike/scooter/bus ride away from the urban core, and it’s a great escape for an hour or a day.
If you can find someone to loan you $500,000 or so, it’s a great place to live as well.

My hood!
There are actually quite affordable options very near to Greenlake, particularly along the Ravenna and Roosevelt corridors. Roosevelt has become very appealing of late, with a solid bar scene and, in 10 years, a light-rail station.
No doubt that if you want a single-family home, you’re gonna pay for it, but damn, it is a great place to live. Superlative park, nice business districts, and, outside of Eastlake, probably the best access to the more interesting neighborhoods in the city (Phinney, Ballard, Wedgewood, Fremont, etc), at least on the North side.
That is a great shot – you are spot on, it does look like Olympia. Weird. I love the park. I got stuck in a tree on the east side of the lake by the boat rental place when I was 5 – a branch got caught through the back belt loop in my pants and it took 2 hours for my mother to find me and pull me out.
