Updated 5/18/2012: 9:05pm – Today, workers began assembling the wheel portion of the new Seattle Ferris Wheel.
It was the first opportunity I got (or anyone got, really) to see the size of the wheel against the backdrop of Downtown Seattle, and I am happy to report that it doesn’t look as out of place as I had feared that it might.
Even though the wheel is quite large at 200′ tall, it is still dwarfed by the nearby skyscrapers, and is thus not in danger of dominating the skyline.
As it stands now, I approve of the aesthetic impact of the new wheel.
I’m sure this comes as a huge relief to the owner of Pier 57 who values, above all else, my opinion.

nice shots – they have been super quick once the additional pilings were placed. When I walked past on Thurs they had just the support and spindle parts up, now it looks like nearly the full circle is installed. I work in the ‘ban roll-on’ building right behind the wheel and have been watching them work for some time. I think it will be a positive addition – especially when lit up at night.
I don’t know what’s taking them so long. Carnies can put up a wheel overnight in the dark.
i want to go on it!
