A few months ago, I wrote a short post about the Chase Bank that was vandalized on Capitol Hill. Hours after posting it, I received a comment on the blog from someone named “Smith” who simply said:
“Very uneducated people are obviously writing your articles”
The critique was fair enough, but it was without substance or rebuttal. When I looked at the posting host, it was apparent why this was. You see, “Smith” was posting from a JP Morgan Chase office. Basically, according to Chase, criticizing Chase is “uneducated”.
Here’s the thing, though … according to Seattle Rex, criticizing Seattle Rex makes you a serial killing pedophile.
Smith, I’m looking at you.
In any event, comes word today that yours truly may not be quite as uneducated as our moneyed overlords would have you believe.
I direct you to: http://www.king5.com/news/125105599.html
Basically, some African-looking guy took a cashier’s check to Chase, at which point the bank had the man arrested. The guy spent 5 days in jail and had his car towed and auctioned off.
It turns out that the check was good, though, and Chase had made a terrible mistake. Instead of copping to the mistake and making it right, however, Chase waited nearly a year until it was contacted by corporate media before “apologizing”.
Nice.
I’m really supposed to be outraged when some misguided kid breaks your window?
Heh, no offense Smith, but fuck you in the most unholy of orifices. You destructive criminals deserve each other.
Stay classy, Chase.
I’ll stay uneducated.

wow..if this guy is any smart he’d get a lawyer and sue the crap out of chase…a good lawyer would get 7 digits easy. i wish i had a remotely similar situation so i can unleash all my rage against the criminal banking system.
Thanks for the story Rex. Pissed me off enough I initiated the closing of my three Chase credit cards. Had to send three separate email inquiries due to their inefficient web site. They claim to respond to all request within four hours; they have 3 hours and 48 minutes remaining! I was kind enough to let them know why I will be closing my three acocunts, not that it will matter to them but I just could not resist getting a small jab in!
Good for you. It may not mean much to them, but every little bit helps. Doing something is always better than doing nothing. When everyone else is standing around pointing fingers, at least you can say you tried.
I don’t have an account with Chase or I would do the same. Honestly, all of the big banks (and most of the small ones) suck. Americans are rapidly running out of options.
Unfortunately, this is kind of the point. Consolidation narrows our options, which in turn allows the big boys to give us whatever service they wish without fear that we will jump ship.
The government and courts have done everything in their power to make sure that we will all see this eventuality.
You know, to help fight the war on terror or whatever other explanation Walmart shoppers will swallow.
Update! Well, i was ama… uh, suprised, they did respond within their stipulated four hour limit. Account Rep.1 Navinsingh Negi was sorry to hear of my decision in that I have been a valuable customer since 1990; but Card#1 has been closed and my reward points would transfer to Card #2, he/she also informed me that reward points on Card #3 were available for redemption. Mr/Mrs. Negi suggested that I spend my reward points prior to closing Cards #2&3.
Account Rep.2 Reisang Horam also informed me that I had reward points and suggested I redeem before closing Card#2.
Accout Rep.3 Neeru Kapoor Anand was kind enough to let me know I had reward points on Card#3 and offered the same advice.
I now have $65 of starbucks cards on the way for my lovely bride!
Cont.
After point redemption on cards 2&3, per their instruction I emailed back and the remaining two accounts were closed within approximately 40 minutes. I have to say this was almost commendable. Regardless, their unobservant behavior concerning that Auburn guy was repugnant. I am certain that my reason for closing these accounts will remain with Navinsingh, Reisang and Neeru but that’s okay; I’m feeling good about it and my lovely bride LOVES starbucks!
I’m thinking the Chase customer service center is not located in Indiana.
Chase sucked up my WAMU mortgage and I am considering refinancing elsewhere. They frequently call or mail offers to expand “my banking relationship”. If I didn’t have a few years left, I would refinance elsewhere.
The “Too Big To Fail” banks all blow. Find and support your local community bank (well until they get bought out by a larger bank which has happened to me four times).
Picking a favorite bank is like picking a favorite STD.
Enjoyed the article, Rex.
THAT’S the fucking VegasRex, oops, SeattleRex I know. Tell it like it is, don’t hold back. And if you do hold back, permission is granted for someone to slap sense back into you.
Banks are in this too big to fail mode lately. And they are compelled to get bolder and bolder. Look at all the stories lately about foreclosing on properties mistakenly. And same thing, no apologies after realizing their mistake.
I yanked all my money out of CitiBank here in Las Vegas and am with a credit union that treats me better.
And I’m in the process of getting out from under Wells Fargo and putting my mortgage elsewhere…somewhere where you get treated better.
There was a move afoot a few years ago for people to jerk their money out of identified big nationwide banks and go with other smaller banks/credit unions. I hope people continue to do this and it snowballs to local government money and small businesses where they put their money.
You take money out of accounts, that SLAPS them fucking silly. They will howl with indignation and complain like spoilt kids.
Anyways, Rex, you dah man. I still enjoy reading your escapades, even though you moved and report on the Pacific Northwest.
By the way, I loved your video about the Canadian invasion of Seattle (geese). Laughed my ass off.
Banks are all the same so pick one and stick with them. Closing accounts nowadays is a royal PITA considering this is how many people get paid and pay their bills – a major hassle to change all of the banking information and likely to only lead to fuck-ups and headaches.
I work in a business where banks lobby us for pieces of billion dollar deals weekly. This is where the real money is made and where the serious ass kissing and groveling occurs. It’s all in investment banking.
The retail guy is an after thought; Some fool opens an account while another closes theirs. Makes no difference to the bank.
